The development and availability of reverse engineering techniques and rapid prototyping tools in recent years make them at the heart of product development in the industry. To prepare students to this challenge, this course introduces students to prototyping thinking as related to innovative product development, but also to prototyping techniques and tools. The course provides also a hands-on expertise on different prototyping open hardware platforms and rapid prototyping machines
The two main goals of the course are:
- Strengthening student’s capability in product development by reverse engineering techniques
- Strengthening student’s capability in product development by prototyping rationale, techniques and tools
The specific goals are:
- Understand the importance and use of reverse engineering techniques in product development
- Gain an understanding and hands-on skills on rapid prototyping tools
- Understand prototyping techniques and their use in product development
- Gain hands-on experience on hardware platforms like Mindstorms, Arduino, open hardware sensors and actuators, …
- Introduction to open knowledge and the Maker movement
- Apply and practice theoretical concepts learned in class
- Improve students’ abilities for seeking information and exploring new ideas and new fields of knowledge.
- Enhance communication skill, work in teams and share ideas
